A Guide to Tea Utensils

Classification and Roles of Materials in Chinese Tea Ware: Characteristics of Pottery, Porcelain, Glass, and Metalware

When comparing tools for Chinese tea, do not determine their quality based on the material name alone; first, confirm the intended purpose of the vessel. The points to check differ depending on whether it is a vessel for brewing tea, a vessel for drinking tea, a tool for portioning tea leaves, or a stand for teaware.

For Pottery and Porcelain, Observe the Surface and Structure

In addition to the names "pottery" or "porcelain," check the product description for the presence of glaze, the interior finish, the shape of the tea strainer, and the capacity. Even when materials are labeled the same, the same usage and care instructions do not apply to every piece. How to compare Yixing teapots and Tokoname kyusu is summarized in Concepts on Materials, Structure, and Proper Use.

For Glass, Confirm Usage and Heat Resistance

When using glass vessels for tea service, do not choose them solely based on visual transparency; verify if the product is suitable for boiling water. Follow the instructions for each individual product regarding suitability for direct heat or microwave use, and do not make assumptions based solely on the material name "glass."

For Metalware, Distinguish Between Material and Finish

The label "metal" alone does not indicate the specific material or surface treatment. SEKIMONO's current copper teaware includes tea scoops (chasoku) for portioning tea leaves, lid rests (futaoki), and pot stands (hucheng) or tea trays. These are custom-made in Wuxi, China, and undergo hand-finishing and surface coloring.

For example, the Fortune from All Directions Pot Stand is a tool for placing teapots or kyusu. Do not treat it as a vessel for boiling water or place it over a fire simply because it is made of metal.

Things to Check Before Purchase

  • The vessel's purpose and the teaware it will be paired with.
  • Material, surface finish, and published dimensions.
  • Compatibility with heat sources and care instructions provided by the maker.
  • Placement during daily tea service and storage methods.

Copper tools for placing teaware can be viewed in our Pot Stand Collection, and the roles of tools in general can be found in our Guide to Choosing Chinese Teaware.
