All tea utensils may look similar in photos or on screen. However, the true difference—the emotion felt when holding them and whether they can last for a decade of use—is clearly reflected in the precision of their craftsmanship. We have compiled five check items to help you identify authentic, high-quality tea utensils.
1. Five-Point Quality Checklist for High-End Tea Utensils
- Dead weight (Density of solid, non-hollow construction): Does it have a "solid weight beyond its appearance" the moment you pick it up? Hollow, thin-pressed items are light and move cheaply on the table.
- Edge chamfering and polishing (Total elimination of burrs): Are the edges of the spout, rim, and base smoothly rounded to the touch? Items crafted with careful handwork have no rough edges at all.
- Seamless joints: Are there any excess solder spills or gaps at the brazed (welded) points, or is it finished to look like a single, integrated piece?
- Stability and sound when placed: When placed on a flat surface, does it sit without wobbling (distortion) and land with a settled, low-pitched sound?
- Uniformity and depth of the surface finish: Instead of the glare of chemical coatings, does it emit a natural depth from deep within the metal, achieved through heat-induced oxidation?
2. The Craftsman's Pride Dwelling in the Details
Whether careful polishing and finishing have been applied even to areas usually unseen, such as the back or the bottom. That is where the respect for the user and the craftsman's pride reside.
