A Guide to Tea Utensils

Care and handling of water droplets for tea canister coasters | Basics of wiping and storage after use

A tea pot stand is a tool used to set the tea stage by placing a tea pot or kyusu upon it. When finished using it, lift the vessel and check that no moisture remains on the top or bottom surfaces. Here, we cover the daily maintenance of copper tea pot stands featuring hand-finishing and surface coloring by SEKIMONO.

Remove the tea ware before wiping

Do not tilt the tea pot stand while the kyusu or tea pot is still on it; move the vessel to another stable place before performing maintenance. If you were using hot tea ware, please also be mindful of the temperature of the tea pot stand. Gently wipe away water droplets with a soft cloth, and ensure that none remain in the recesses or along the rim.

Do not leave moisture where it was placed

Check not only the top surface of the tea pot stand, but also its base, the tea cloth, and the tabletop. Do not store it while it is resting on a damp tea cloth; let each item dry. It is also important not to assume that using a tea pot stand will automatically prevent the influence of moisture or heat on your tabletop.

Do not attempt to adjust surface color by polishing

Do not use metal polishes or abrasive sponges on copperware with surface coloring. If you are concerned about changes in color, do not rub it vigorously on your own; instead, check the basic care for copper tea ware. If you are unsure about how to handle persistent stains or the condition of the piece, please contact us with an attached photo.

Ensure it is dry before organizing how it is stacked

When putting it away, arrange how you place it so that the surface does not rub against other tea ware. When you go to use it next, check the condition of the tea pot or kyusu you intend to place on it. For example, the outer dimensions of the Listening to Bamboo are approximately φ192 × H30 mm, but compatibility with a vessel is not determined by dimensions alone.
