A Guide to Tea Utensils

Enjoy Chinese Tea in a Small Space | A Practical Combination of Tools for a Compact Tea Setup

Many people feel they "don't have a formal tea room or a large table at home" or "would like to enjoy Chinese tea in a corner of their workspace or on a small living room table." Even without large, dedicated furniture, you can fully enjoy the authentic flavor and peaceful moments of Chinese tea in a limited space by minimizing the number of tools and organizing their layout. In contrast to Western brewing methods that rely on single large teapots, compact Gongfu setups emphasize smaller vessels and multi-steep precision (see our breakdown of Gongfu brewing equipment versus Western tools). In this article, we explain how to set up a small Chinese tea arrangement for space-saving enjoyment and the best combination of tools.

1. Three tips for setting up a space-saving tea arrangement

  • Adopt the "Dry Brewing" (Ganpao) style: By using a style where you place a tea pot stand (hucheng) on a tea cloth or runner instead of a large drainage tea tray, you can significantly reduce the required space.
  • Limit the number of tools: Start with the bare minimum: "Teapot (or gaiwan) + tea cup + teapot stand + tea scoop + lid rest."
  • Choose compact-sized tools: By selecting tools designed with compact lengths and diameters, you can create appropriate negative space on the table.

2. Recommended tool composition for a small tea arrangement

  1. Tea cloth/small mat: Defines the boundary of your tea space and protects the desk from water droplets.
  2. Teapot stand (φ192mm): Organizes the base for your teapot.
  3. Short tea scoop (112mm): A compact tea scoop that won't get in the way even on a small tea mat.
  4. Lid rest (φ53mm): Secures a small space for resting a hot lid.
