A Guide to Tea Utensils

How to choose the size for a tea mat or table runner: Formulas for calculating margins and overhang based on tabletop dimensions

Simply laying a "chaseki-fu" (table runner) across your table can instantly transform an everyday space into a tranquil tea-serving area. If it’s too short, it looks undersized and meager; if it’s too wide, it overwhelms the table. Here, we explain the formula for choosing the perfect size to suit your table dimensions.

1. The Golden Rule for Width: 1/3 of the Table Width

For the most balanced look, the width of the table runner should be approximately 1/3 to 1/2 of the table's total depth (short side).

  • 60cm deep desk: Runner width of 20–25cm
  • 80–90cm deep dining table: Runner width of 30–35cm

Leaving a moderate margin of the tabletop visible on both sides of the runner prevents the tea setting from feeling heavy, creating a light and three-dimensional effect.

2. Length Formula: Table Length + "30–50cm of Drape"

The ideal length for the fabric to naturally drape over both ends of the table is 15–25cm per side (30–50cm total).

  • Formula: Required runner length = Table length + (20cm drape × 2)
  • Example: For a 120cm long desk → Choose a runner of around 160cm.

3. Choosing Materials: Water-Repellent vs. Natural Linen/Cotton

For daily practice or desk work, water-repellent fabric is practical as it beads water and is easy to maintain. Conversely, for a formal tea setting when hosting guests, choosing natural linen or hand-spun cotton—which feature beautiful natural wrinkles and shadows—will significantly enhance the textures of your metal and ceramic wares.
