A Guide to Tea Utensils

Choosing and Pairing Teacup Coasters: Enhancing the Beauty of Tea Cups with Copper, Bamboo, Wood, and Fabric

The "chataku" (teacup saucer) is used when serving hot tea to guests, preventing burns to the fingers and protecting the table from heat and drips. Combining different materials for the teacup and saucer—known as "material pairing"—is a crucial way to express the style of your tea service and a sense of the season. Here, we explain the compatibility and how to choose based on material.

1. The Appeal of Teacup Saucers by Material and Pairing

  • Metal (Copper, Brass, Tin): Provides a dignified and stately presence. When paired with thin white porcelain or celadon teacups, the deep shadows of the metal accentuate the translucency of the porcelain, creating a sophisticated contrast.
  • Bamboo and Solid Wood (Mulberry, Ebony, Cherry): Offers a rustic, warm texture. These pair well with the unglazed, natural feel of Yixing clay or stoneware teacups, and feel exceptionally comfortable in the hand.
  • Fabric (Antique cloth, Linen embroidery): Provides soft cushioning and high absorbency. Suitable for glass teacups and casual, everyday tea settings.

2. Size Balance Between Teacup and Saucer

Choose a saucer where the diameter of the center indentation (the cup seat) is about 3–5mm larger than the diameter of the teacup's foot ring; this ensures the cup sits securely without wobbling.

3. Metal Saucers: Enjoying the Aging Process

Solid copper saucers, which develop a deep amber or antique bronze patina over time, are highly prized by tea enthusiasts as lifelong tools that allow one to appreciate the beauty of aging.
