A Guide to Tea Utensils

Care and Storage of Chinese Tea Sets and Copper Tea Utensils: Tips for Daily Maintenance and Storage

The basic daily care for Chinese tea utensils and copper tea tools is to "wipe away water droplets with a soft cloth after use and let them dry thoroughly before storing."
In particular, for copper tea tools, it is recommended to avoid dishwashers and abrasive cleansers, and to maintain them daily by gently wiping them with a soft cloth.

Tea tools are made from a variety of materials used on the tea table, such as ceramics, unglazed pottery (Zisha), metal, bamboo, and wood. This article outlines the care procedures for copper tea tools and points to check for their storage and organization.

1. Daily care procedures for copper tea tools

Step 1: Wipe off moisture after use

If tea liquor or water droplets adhere to tea scoops (chasoku), lid rests (futaoki), teapot stands (koshou), or tea trays (chaban), do not leave them; absorb the moisture with a soft cloth. Leaving water droplets to dry can lead to stains or localized discoloration.

Step 2: Wipe dry with a soft cloth

After wiping off the moisture, gently dry the surface with a clean, soft cloth such as cotton. Avoid using metal scrubbers, cleansers containing abrasives, or metal polishing cloths, as they may damage the surface finish. Also, these items are not dishwasher safe.

Step 3: Air dry

After wiping, let the tea tools air dry in an environment without trapped humidity before placing them in their storage area.

2. Points for storing tea tools

Considerations for airflow and contact

When storing tea tools, ensure they are completely dry. When storing them alongside ceramics or other metalware, it is best to protect them with a cloth or divider to prevent direct, forceful contact that could cause scratches or chips.
