Design and Surface Modeling of Copper Tea Trays: A Comparative Study of "Wealth from All Directions," "Daylily," and "Listening to Bamboo on a Rock" Designs

Design and Surface Modeling of Copper Pot Stands | A Comparison of "Hapō-Rai-Zai," "Daylily," and "Listening to Bamboo on the Rocks"

A "hucho" (pot stand) is a pedestal tool used in Chinese and Taiwanese tea ceremonies to hold a teapot (chahu). SEKIMONO’s copper hucho are available in three designs, each featuring distinct relief modeling on a circular surface: "Hapō-Rai-Zai," "Daylily," and "Listening to Bamboo on the Rocks."

In this article, we objectively compare the relief modeling, linear expressions, and shading designs of these surfaces, summarizing the sculptural techniques unique to copperware.

1. Features of Relief Modeling and Design in Copperware

All SEKIMONO hucho are crafted from copper in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, China, and feature hand-applied finishing and surface patination. Utilizing the inherent ductility of metal, they are characterized by surface modeling that creates delicate undulations and a contrast of light and shadow.

2. Overview of the Three SEKIMONO Copper Hucho Designs

The following is an overview of the design motifs and sculptural expressions of the three pieces (outer dimensions and retail prices are included as reference specifications).

Piece Name Design Motif (Official Specs) Surface Modeling & Expression Reference Specs (Size/Price)
Hapō-Rai-Zai Crab-inspired relief and fine line work A design that adds depth to the surface with relief modeling and intricate lines on a circular base. Approx. ⌀192 × H30 mm・$139
Daylily Flowers and graceful leaves A design featuring soft, spreading plant curves and a graceful expression. Approx. ⌀192 × H30 mm・$129
Listening to Bamboo on the Rocks Rock-like undulations and bamboo leaves A model depicting a serene scene with rock textures and bamboo leaves on the surface. Approx. ⌀192 × H30 mm・$129

3. Sculptural Beauty and Surface Shading of Each Design

While all are circular plates with an outer diameter of approximately 192mm, their surface relief gives each a unique character.

① Hapō-Rai-Zai: Linear Expressions and Geometric Elements

The circular surface features a crab-inspired relief and fine line work, adding depth to the space where tea utensils are placed.

② Daylily: Floral and Graceful Botanical Design

This piece depicts flowers and spreading leaves, characterized by soft, flowing curves. It is well-suited for pairing with white porcelain or pale-colored tea sets.

③ Listening to Bamboo on the Rocks: A Serene Scene of Rocks and Bamboo

Featuring rock-like undulations and bamboo leaves, this design paints a quiet scene on the copper surface. It pairs beautifully with Zisha (purple clay) teapots and other earth-textured vessels.

4. Care Instructions and Surface Patination

After use, wipe away moisture with a soft cloth and allow to air-dry in a well-ventilated area. Please avoid using abrasive cleaners, metal scouring pads, or dishwashers, as these can damage the surface finish.
