A Guide to Tea Utensils

How to transfer tea leaves into a kyusu or teapot using a chazeb (tea scoop)

A tea scoop (chasoku) is a tool used to catch tea leaves and transfer them into a kyusu (Japanese teapot) or chahu (Chinese teapot). Here, we will not be explaining the tea scoop itself, but rather looking step-by-step at the process of transferring the tea leaves.

Basic workflow for transferring tea leaves with a tea scoop

  1. Take out the tea leaves.
Remove the portion of tea leaves you intend to use from a tea canister or similar container.
  2. Catch them with the tea scoop.
Catch the tea leaves you have removed onto the tea scoop.
  3. Transfer to the kyusu or chahu.
Bring the tea scoop to the opening of the kyusu or chahu and transfer the tea leaves inside.

Things to keep in mind

Definitions of tea scoops and the dimensions of individual pieces can be checked on other pages. You cannot determine compatibility with a specific kyusu or chahu based solely on shape and dimensions. Please also check the information provided on each product page before purchasing.
